NEW EVENT 14th British Silent Film Festival: What Next? (1928) + shorts

The recently rediscovered What Next? (UK 1928, dir. Walter Forde, 60 min) is one of a series of comedy features made by popular British comedian Walter Forde, who stars here as a bric-a-brac salesman who unwittingly buys a valuable antique candlestick that is also being sought by a deranged archaeologist with a Napoleon complex.

David Rose discusses half a century of working in theatre, television and cinema, from being the first producer of Z Cars to founding Channel 4's Film on Four. Between 1981 and 1990 David commissioned136 films, working with, amongst others, Mike Leigh, Alan Bleasdale, Willy Russell and Stephen Frears.

Our programme this evening showcases the life and work of Chinese American actress Anna May Wong, who defied cultural and legal barriers to achieve stardom in silent and talking pictures. A documentary about her will be followed by a Q&A with the director and a screening of the rarely-seen 1928 film Song, aka Schmutziges Geld (German)/Show Life (UK), featuring Anna in one of her classic roles.
