The 'Jack the Ripper' murders in 1888 have been interpreted in any number of ways across the world, but in Britain, especially in films, class has been a major preoccupation. What class was ‘Jack the Ripper’? Professor Richard Dyer traces this across a number of films, from The Lodger 1927 through Hammer horror treatments in the 1950s and 1960s, to From Hell in 2001.

Film historians Tony Fletcher and Alex Gleason select an eclectic mix of rarely seen gems from the 1920s-1970s, mainly culled from the collection at the Cinema Museum, including Vitaphones, R.K.O. shorts, animation, a one-reel version of The Lodger, a silent comedy compilation by Philip Jenkinson, some early British Phototones, a Widgey Newman and a film by Mervyn Peake - make sure you bring your Marmite sandwiches!

Neil Brand – The Silent Pianist Speaks
