Chilean director won a best foreign film Oscar for A Fantastic Woman. It’s an intimate exploration of female solitude, sexuality, humiliation and resilience, this time built around a transgender singer.

Played by the remarkable transgender actress Daniela Vega, the central character, Marina Vidal, shows fortitude and self-possession that won’t quit, regardless of the blows she’s dealt.

Making nods to Almodóvar and Fassbinder, this film from Chilean director Sebastián Lelio is both an incisive character study and an alluring exercise in style.
