Henry EdwardsThe Kennington Bioscope is a regular cinema event featuring live accompaniment to silent films that takes place at the Cinema Museum.

The main feature is East is East (1916), directed by and starring Henry Edwards. This is a 35mm print from the BFI.

Florence Turner plays Victoria Vickers, who lives with her aunt and uncle in the East End of London, and is being courted by Bert Grummett, played by Henry Edwards. While on her annual summer ‘holiday’ hop picking in Kent, she discovers from a London solicitor that she has inherited a fortune from a wealthy distant relative.

The BFI’s Bryony Dixon writes of the film: “The locations are well chosen and evocative of a bygone era, particularly the lovely scenes in the Kentish hop fields. The film is also notable for capturing an early performance by Edith Evans who outrageously upstages everyone at every opportunity”.

Anyone interested in silent film should visit the website for more info and to request an invitation using the email kenbioscope@gmail.com.
