Venezuela screening: Oriana (1985)

Oriana posterA season of films from Venezuela’s so-called Golden Age of cinema, which took place during the 70s and 80s, at a time of much social and political upheaval.

The first in this series is the classic Oriana (1985), with an online Q&A with director Fina Torres. The film won the Caméra d’Or Prize at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival as the best first feature.

Maria, a Venezuelan woman returns to Venezuela from France when she learns that her aunt Oriana has died and willed her a crumbling and remote Venezuelan hacienda where Maria spent a short time as a girl just entering puberty. Returning to the property, she discovers some secrets about her aunt’s life, and why she never left the hacienda.

Doors open at 18.30, film starts at 19.30.

Live music and typical Venezuelan food will also be provided.
