Casablanca turns 75 this year. To mark the occasion, the film critic and historian, Adam Feinstein – a specialist in the life and work of the man who directed this legendary movie, Michael Curtiz – will introduce a special screening. He will reveal previously unknown facts and demolish some of the oft-repeated myths surrounding the making of the picture (including insights from his conversation with Ingrid Bergman’s daughter, Isabella Rossellini) and explain why Casablanca has remained such an enduringly popular masterpiece for three quarters of a century.

Despite the chaotic nature of the shooting of the film, everything gels perfectly: from the exceptional cast (Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains, Paul Henreid and many genuine refugees from Nazism in Europe) to the witty and cynical screenplay by the Epstein twins, Julius and Philip, together with Howard Koch and Casey Robinson, as well as Arthur Edeson’s wonderful cinematography and the unforgettable score by Max Steiner (even though he initially hated the song ‘As Time Goes By’). And the entire operation was marshalled with masterful (and Oscar-winning) glamour, panache and pacing by Michael Curtiz himself.
