Kinima Presents: The Sting and Live Cine-Variety Acts

Sat 14 Jun 2014 @ 18:30 · Events

Still from The Sting (1973) showing Paul Newman and Robert Redford in characterKinima would like to invite you to the superb yet forgotten world of cine-variety shows!

With roots in the music halls of the 1850s, the classic variety show grew into something new and exciting with the advent of cinema. During the early part of the 20th century, on the cusp of a new scientific age, the entertainment style of the music halls was adopted by some of the more forward-thinking cinemas to create a new and exciting experience: a mix of live performance and moving pictures.

Kinima’s aim is to bring this lost art to you by providing a fresh selection of fast-paced variety acts and genre-defining films, all based in the spectacular Cinema Museum.

Our first instalment will be George Roy Hill’s winner of seven Academy Awards, The Sting (1973).  Set in a beautifully realised 1930s Chicago, The Sting follows a pair of con artists who find themselves in a high-stakes game against the master of all cheating mobsters. Created by screenwriter David S. Ward, the story was inspired by real-life con artists, brothers Fred and Charley Gondorff. The film is noted for its brilliant use of ragtime, particularly the melody The Entertainer by Scott Joplin, which was adapted for the movie by Marvin Hamlisch. Charming and funny, The Sting is a perfect reunion for the director and stars Paul Newman and Robert Redford.

A live jazz band will set the mood, and variety acts will rekindle the essence of the period. There will be plenty of chances to drink, chat, and share stirring moments at the first evening presented to you by Kinima.
