Kennington Noir presents The Big Heat (1953)

Wed 17 Sep 2025 @ 19:30 · Events

The Big Heat The Big Heat (1954), directed by Fritz Lang, with Glenn Ford, Gloria Grahame and Lee Marvin.

Sergeant Dave Bannion (Ford) is a homicide detective called in to investigate the death of a fellow cop. His superiors are happy to regard the death as suicide, but Bannion knows otherwise, and is soon on the trail of a crime syndicate. When his wife is killed by a bomb planted in his car, Bannion is hell-bent on revenge. He comes up against sadistic hoodlum Vince Stone (Marvin), and his girlfriend Debby (Gloria Grahame in one of her finest roles). Bannion is going to find out the hard way that Stone won’t take no for an answer.

The Guardian‘s Peter Bradshaw describes it as ‘taut and violent’, adding ‘the film is drum-tight, directed with muscular clarity and force’. A true noir classic.

Doors open at 18.30, for a 19.30 start.

Refreshments will be available in our licensed cafe/bar.
