The Castle is an intimate and impressionistic feature-length documentary exploring the Southwark landmark that is the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre. The film weaves together the lives of the Irish proprietor of the vast bingo hall, a fiercely independent and industrious Colombian seamstress, a charismatic Egyptian computer shop owner and engineer, a self proclaimed ‘Elephant and Castler’ – who’s been visiting the centre since it opened – and lastly the centre itself, a brutalist monolith filled with creaking escalators, endless vistas of bingo tables and antiquated slot machines.
Observing their everyday lives against a backdrop of imminent regeneration, the beauty of the centre and the humanity of its occupants are revealed. For, despite its impending fate, there is still life in this old beast, a steady beating heart of interior activity that belies its monolithic, run-down exterior.
Directed by Victoria Burns and produced by Loubna Turjuman, the production of The Castle was supported by a UAL Mead Fellowship Award.
Running time: 63 minutes.
