The Gothique Film Society presents The Flying Serpent (1946) And It’s Alive (1974, 35mm)

Fri 10 Oct 2025 @ 19:00 · Events

The Flying Serpent posterFounded in 1966, the Gothique Film Society specialises in double bills ‘for the connoisseur of the macabre’.

The Flying Serpent opens our new season in fine style – with one of the most outrageous monsters of all time, a worthy rival to the not-so-awesome beast featured in The Giant Claw!

If the plot will seem familiar, you’re not wrong, as this was the third outing in the 1940s for this tale of a creature controlled by a scientist bent on revenge, following The Devil Bat (1940) and, less obviously, The Mad Monster (1942). Fortunately, Gothique favourite, Manchester-born George Zucco is on hand, playing his archetypal mad doctor role to perfection. It’s all nonsense, of course, but great fun!

Following that opener, we are delighted to present our main feature on 35mm, courtesy of the Cinema Museum’s extensive film collection. It’s lovely to wheel out the ‘old technology’ from time to time!

It’s Alive! comes complete with one of the greatest taglines: “There’s only one thing wrong with the Davis baby: It’s alive!!” This tale of a murderous you-know-what comes from the warped mind of writer/director/producer Larry Cohen, who made a name for himself in our genre with the likes of God Told Me To, Q (tying in with our companion feature!) and The Stuff.

John P. Ryan and Sharon Farrell play the unfortunate parents, and special effects maestro Rick Baker came up with a truly chilling creation. The film was so successful that it spawned two sequels – It Lives Again and It’s Alive: Island of the Alive – as well as a 2009 remake. This will screen from a 35mm print

Doors open at 18.00 for a 19.00 start.

Refreshments will be available in the licensed cafe/bar.
