Founded in 1966, the Gothique Film Society specialises in double bills ‘for the connoisseur of the macabre’.

Mark of the Vampire is often described as a talkie remake by director Tod Browning of his ‘lost’ silent horror London after Midnight (1927), although it does not credit that film or its writers and the screenplay was co-written by Guy Endore, author of the novel The Werewolf of Paris (1933). Indeed, its
working title was Vampires of Prague.

A series of deaths following vampire attacks lead to occult expert Professor Zelen being brought in to protect young Irina, who is about to be married. A short while ago her father died from a complete loss of blood, with bite marks on his neck…who could be responsible – and what involvement do sinister Count Mora (the wonderful Bela Lugosi) and his acolyte Luna (the lovely Carroll Borland) have?

The Last Man on Earth famously stars Vincent Price as the sole survivor of a plague that has killed most of the world’s population and turned the remainder into vampire mutants. By day, he journeys through the city, staking as many of the vampires as possible, while they hide in the shadows, waiting for the darkness when they can resume their attacks on him.

Based on Richard Matheson’s celebrated novel, I Am Legend, the film asks questions about ‘identity’ and what, in society, is ‘normal’, as the ‘stalker’ wearies of his task, and the ‘stalked’ seek to turn the tables on him.
