PEPCOT (Peckham Experimental Prototype Cinema of Tomorrow) presents two slasher films set in LA’s Sherman Oaks Galleria Mall, as a fundraiser for The Outside Project Trans+ Winter Night Shelter.
The mall has always loomed large in the PEPCOT legend, so when we watched (back to back) these two films, both made at the Sherman Oaks Galleria Mall in LA’s San Fernando Valley – spiritual home of the legendary Valley Girl – we were obsessed. One made just after the peak of the slasher golden age, the other at the close of the decade, complete with a 90’s flavored pop-punk theme song – (cn, r word) Is There a Phantom in the Mall? – The Vandals. The screenings will be preceded by a short introduction to the Sherman Oaks Galleria and its place in mall history.
18.00: Doors open. Come for drink amongst amazing artefacts of cinemas past. Also, seating is unallocated so we suggest getting down early!
19.00: Chopping Mall (1986) – 76mins [digital] – a hot and sexy warning against police automation. Originally titled Killbots, come find out why!
20.45: Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge (1989) – 92mins [digital] – a camp unmasking of corruption in urban planning based on Gaston Leroux’s 1909 novel. Not a sequel!
We are so excited to be screening these films at The Cinema Museum! Come and experience a splicing of time and place as the golden age of the great American mall is introduced to a Victorian workhouse revived as cinephile heaven.
Fundraiser for The Outside Project Trans+ Winter Night Shelter
The shelter will provide a safe, supportive refuge for our Trans+ community who are homeless, escaping domestic abuse, seeking asylum, refugees and at risk of sleeping rough. Now more than ever we must be there for our trans siblings! No one is truly safe or free until we all are.
PEPCOT Peckham Experimental Prototype Cinema of Tomorrow is a little cinema club with big dreams dedicated to movies on the margins and cheap thrills!
