The Suspect (1944), directed by Robert Siodmak, with Charles Laughton, Ella Raines and Dean Harens.
Laughton plays Philip Marshall, a kindly manager, living in London at the beginning of the last century with his shrewish wife. When he makes friends with a young female stenographer, he sums up the courage to ask his wife for a divorce, but she refuses and instead threatens a scandal. When she dies after a mysterious fall, suspicion falls on Marshall.
This is an early film noir from the great Robert Siodmak, who was very much the master of the genre in the 1940s and 1950s. He found ways of dealing with the notoriously difficult Laughton during the shoot, and the resulting film was well received by critics on its release.
