Kennington Noir presents The Big Steal (1949)

Wed 19 Jun 2024 @ 19:30 · Events

The Big Steal The Big Steal (1949), directed by Don Siegel, with Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer and William Bendix.

Two years after film noir masterwork Out of the Past, producer Howard Hughes brought Mitcham and Greer together again to star as two people who have been robbed by the same crook, and team up, reluctantly at first, to track him down. They chase him across Mexico, all the while being watched themselves by policemen played by William Bendix and Ramon Novarro. The Big Steal has thrilling chases and plenty of humour, and Mitcham and Greer are again well-matched.

Hughes wanted to cash in on Mitchum’s notoriety following his arrest for possession of marijuana, but his stay in prison, as well as Greer’s pregnancy, meant director Siegel had to shoot fast and out of sequence. The film came in under budget, with a compact running time of 71 minutes.

16mm film presentation.

Doors open at 18.30, for a 19.30 start.
