Exploding Cinema’s Transatlantic Film Swap

Sat 3 Feb 2024 @ 19:00 · Events

Exploding Cinema's Transatlantic Film SwapA new collaboration between London’s Exploding Cinema and New York’s Millennium Film Workshop celebrates raw film making talent from the UK, USA and beyond. These two venerable institutions, totalling between them 81 years’ experience of showcasing independent and underground film, have put together a night of short films from both their submission bags.

Taking place simultaneously at The Cinema Museum in London and the Millennium Film Workshop in Brooklyn, the event is a screening of two halves: one programme of films from Exploding and one from Millennium. Film makers will be present both in person and remote, audiences will be both live and online, and the films themselves will cover every genre and mood that is possible to conceive.

The Millennium Film Workshop was founded in 1966 by a group of filmmakers with a vision to expand accessibility to the tools, ideas, and networks of filmmaking beyond the confines of institutions and corporate studios. Millennium has put on countless educational workshops, artist-hosted screenings, printed our renowned publication The Millennium Film Journal, served as a production hub kickstarting the careers of many prominent filmmakers such as Stan Brakhage, Todd Haynes, Yvonne Rainer, Carolee Schneeman, Michael Snow, Bruce Connor, Nick Zedd, Andy Warhol and Bruce Connor and has played a large role in dismantling the monetary and educational barriers separating the art and craft of filmmaking from the general public.

Exploding Cinema is a screening collective born in a bunker at the back of a squat – a disused sun tan oil factory in Brixton- amid the underground art squat scene in 1991. Self organised, they run nights of short film, underground cinema, artists moving image and performance art. Exploding Cinema regularly screens in squats, pubs, clubs, cafes and halls across the UK and around the world, showing new independent short films from any filmmaker and on any subject as long as it’s under 20 minutes.
