Women and Cocaine presents The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933)

Fri 20 Oct 2023 @ 19:30 · Events

The Bitter Tea of General Yen “We’re all of one flesh and blood.” The Bitter Tea of General Yen still stands as one of Frank Capra’s most erotic and provocative films.

Barbara Stanwyck plays Megan Davis, who arrives in China to marry Dr. Robert Strike (Gavin Gordon), her missionary fiancé. The Chinese Civil War interrupts their wedding plans, and the couple is separated while trying to save endangered orphans. Chinese warlord General Yen (Nils Asther) rescues Davis after she faints but subsequently holds her captive, persistently attempting to seduce her. Davis soon becomes attracted to Yen and develops a sympathy for his embattled position.

The film will be preceded by a short introduction and followed by a raffle!

“My father warned me about men & booze, but he never mentioned a word about women & cocaine” – Tallulah Bankhead.
