Women and Cocaine presents Rain (1932) on 16mm

Fri 15 Dec 2023 · Events

Rain (1932) Adapted from W. Somerset Maugham’s short story of sex, sin and salvation.

Joan Crawford plays lady of the night, Sadie Thompson, as compassionate as she is passionate, and in search of a new life in Samoa. When her ship is temporarily stranded at nearby Pago Pago, she passes the time drinking and having fun, until she catches the attention of conflicted missionary Alfred Davidson, played by Walter Huston. Davidson is determined to save her soul, and in doing so, exposes his own hypocrisy and steadily crumbling morals.

Gloria Swanson, Jeanne Eagels and Rita Hayworth have all taken on the notorious role of Sadie Thompson on screen, but Crawford’s portrayal is considered the finest.

Women & Cocaine will celebrate Joan Crawford, the ultimate movie star, this December, screening a special 16mm copy from The Cinema Museum’s archive. The film will be preceded by a short introduction and followed by a raffle!

“My father warned me about men & booze, but he never mentioned a word about women & cocaine” – Tallulah Bankhead.
