Austin Spencer is a newspaper publisher attempting to expose the ineptitude of the city’s hard-line district attorney. He persuades Tom Garrett (Dana Andrews), the fianc√© of his daughter Susan (Joan Fontaine), to take part in a hoax. Tom is to plant clues that will lead to his arrest for the recent murder of a female nightclub dancer, and when he is found guilty, Spencer will reveal the truth, humiliate the District Attorney and Tom will be set free. But tragedy strikes and the plan backfires on Tom…
