Cine Brazil & Brazil Matters present Piripkura (2017)

Thu 4 May 2023 @ 19:30 · Events

PiripkuraPiripkura (2017) is a documentary about the last two surviving members of the Piripkura indigenous people, a nomadic tribe in the Amazon rainforest, in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso. The film follows the struggle to maintain their indigenous way of life amidst the region’s massive deforestation, whose almost inevitable expansion is taking place through violent means. This area of the rainforest can only keep its protected status if there’s proof that the two Piripkura people are still living there. So Jair Candor, coordinator for the protection of these areas at the time, treks into the jungle in search of them, sometimes accompanied by their sole surviving family member Rita.

Through this film, the crew provides proof of the two men’s existence. Piripkura sheds light on the tragedy befalling indigenous people in Brazil — the systematic violence used against them is a constant menacing presence. Despite the impressive resilience and tenacity of the last of the Piripkura, an inevitable question hangs in the air: how long can it last?”

After the film Brazil Matters and the Observatory for the Human Rights of Isolated and Recent Contact Indigenous Peoples (OPI) will discuss the largest threats faced by isolated indigenous peoples in Brazil and what needs to be done to guarantee their survival.

The money raised in this event will be donated to Brazil’s indigenous movement, especially to help towards the costs of the Free Land Camp, the world’s largest indigenous mobilisation which took place in the Brazilian capital, Brasilia, between 24-28 April, and the vigil for the trial of the Time Limit Trick, which will affect all indigenous land demarcations, and is due to be resumed by the Supreme Court on June 7.

This event is organised by Brazil Matters and Cine Brazil and supported by The Cinema Museum.

Brazil Matters is a non-profit organisation aiming to give international visibility of Brazilian issues, denounce human rights violations and support activists and movements at the frontline of resistance in Brazil.
