Rare Cinema Europe presents Kreuzer Emden/Cruiser Emden (1932)

Wed 9 Nov 2022 @ 19:30 · Events

A chance to see a selection of rarely screened fine European films. Kreuzer Emden/Cruiser Emden, (Germany / 1932 /85 mins). Directed by Louis Ralph and starring Louis Ralph, Renee Stobrawa, Hans Schlenck and Werner Fuetterer.

Cruiser Emden is a remake of a 1926 silent film Our Emden which had also been directed by Louis Ralph. The film depicts life for officers and crew, both ashore and on board the German First World War light cruiser SMS Emden. Ralph, himself, plays the ship’s Captain who is tasked with harassing British shipping in the Indian Ocean. Fascinatingly, the 1932 version uses much footage from the silent version and, unusual for the early sound era, successfully synchronizes sound effects and some dialogue to the visual images. The workings of the ship throughout all deck levels are vividly depicted and the scenes of battle are effectively rendered.

We are all use to seeing post 2nd World War films depicting life aboard British warships – In Which We Serve (1942), The Cruel Sea (1952), Battle of The River Plate (1956) – but here’s a rare chance to see the point of view from the other side. Considering the political stance of Kreuzer Emden, it is probable that the film has never previously been shown in the UK, so, this screening could be its British premier.
