1940s Noir with a Female Gaze

Wed 4 Dec 2019 @ 19:00 · Events

1940s Noir with a Female Gaze Shedunnit Productions presents 1940s Noir with a Female Gaze.

Saints, sirens, sinners, spinsters, sickos and the enduring femme fatale – 1940s noir had big issues with female representation. If you love the style, but hate the vintage values of this most mesmerizing of decades, join author Helen Jacey for a talk at the historic Cinema Museum, where she will put some famous noir movies under the spotlight. Helen will share her process in creating Elvira Slate, the first fictional 1940s feminist detective and explore some of the challenges of reinventing the 1940s from a contemporary and female gaze.

Chipped Pearls book coverAfter the talk, there will be a book launch of Chipped Pearls: Elvira Slate Investigations Book 2 (publication date 1st December). Elvira Slate is a Hollywood 1940s detective with a difference – she is an ex-con originally from the Elephant and Castle, so it is fitting the event takes place in the iconic Cinema Museum.

‘A fresh, fast-moving and atmospheric take on Forties Noir with a tough street-wise female detective Philip Marlowe would have been proud to work with.’ – Stephen Wyatt, writer, Classic Chandler, BBC Radio 4 and author of The World and His Wife.

HHelen Jaceyelen is the Creative Director of Shedunnit Productions and author of the acclaimed screenwriting guide Woman in the Story: Writing Memorable Female Characters (Michael Wiese Productions).
