In one of the most important queer history documents of the year, you are invited to uncover precious gems of orphaned home movies, discarded news footage and archive reels of some of the earliest moving images we have of queer lives. At turns thrilling, touching, tantalizing and wondrous, director Stu Maddux documents this too-easily-lost visual history and the lives it represents.

Reel In The Closet (2015) is a feature-length documentary that connects us with queer people from the past through the rare home movies that they left for us. Maddux was searching for a way to really understand the people who came before us, not just by reading about them but by seeing them on screen. During this process he discovered a myriad of old queer home movies dating back to the 1930s in closets and attics around the world, which documented news stories and community productions that were left behind.

Reel In The Closet is the product of this search combining never seen material of queer life of the early 20th century and interviews with archivists who are dedicated to preserve these invaluable artifacts for future generations and to help shape a queer history that has been forgotten. It gives us an incredible glimpse into the histories of people who have fought for the rights we enjoy today.
