Alice Joyce

Alice Joyce in Stella Dallas, made in the same year as The Home Maker.

The Kennington Bioscope is a regular cinema event featuring live accompaniment to silent films that takes place at the Cinema Museum.

The main feature is The Home Maker (1925), directed by King Baggot, and starring Clive Brook and Alice Joyce. This will be presented by Kevin Brownlow.

Based on the bestselling novel by Dorothy Canfield Fisher, The Home Maker tells the story of the Knapp family. Father Lester (Brook) works unhappily in the accounts department of the local department store, while his wife Eva (Joyce) feels constrained in her role as housewife and mother to three children. Lester loses his job, and following an accident, becomes housebound. Eva takes a job with Lester’s old employer. Both find the switch in roles liberating, but can it last?
