An Evening with John Krish

Thu 22 May 2014 @ 19:30 · Events

The acclaimed writer and director introduces a career-spanning programme of four incredibly diverse films. Join John as he explains how he made the leap from documentary company staffer to BAFTA-winning, Oscar-nominated, freelance filmmaker.

I Think They Call Him John’ (1964) unflinchingly questions the lack of care we show for elderly, vulnerable neighbours who live in solitude.

Let My People Go’ (1961) was prompted by the Sharpville massacre in South Africa and educated British audiences to the terrible meaning of Apartheid. ‘Let My People Go’ won the BAFTA United Nations Award and was nominated for an Oscar.

From 1966, shooting of the television series ‘The Avengers’ switched from black and white to colour, with a large budget that would give each episode the look of a feature film. John set the programme’s famous style by directing the opening and end titles and three full episodes, including ‘A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Station’ (1967).

Out Of The Darkness’ (1985) was made for the Children’s Film Foundation. An atmospheric ghost story set in the past and present, it is based on an extraordinary sacrifice in the Derbyshire village of Eyam during the plagues of the 17th century.

Doors open at 18.30 for a 19.30 start. Refreshments will be available in our licensed café/bar.
