The GeneralThe UK Buster Keaton Society. Quarterly meeting of the society dedicated to the appreciation of the silent comedian.

After a selection of Keaton shorts and a break, the second half will be a screening of The General (1926). Buster plays Johnnie Gray, a railway engineer, who tries to enlist with the Confederate army when the Civil War begins, but is rejected – because his profession is vital to the war effort. He and others do not realise this and he is branded a coward. When Union spies capture a train that has his sweetheart as a passenger, Johnnie sets out to rescue both train and girl.

Based on a true incident and the book written about it, the film was a major flop on its release, and the studio took away his independence as a filmmaker. Subsequently, the film has been re-evaluated, and is now regarded as a major masterpiece of the silent Hollywood era.

The meeting runs from 4pm to 7pm.
