Sat 30 Mar 2019 @ 19:00 · Events

Gandolfi-Family BusinessThe Cinema Museum hosts the World Premiere of the digitally remastered print of Gandolfi – Family Business (2003). The documentary feature film follows the making of the last handmade Gandolfi 4 x 5 wooden plate camera. Speaking of the brothers Fred and Arthur Gandolfi, the Sheffield International Documentary Festival on Tour said “The Griffiths Brothers film lovingly captures the beauty of their craft, the legacy of their family and the last years of their remarkable lives “

Thirty-six years ago the late award winning photographer Ken Griffiths had an idea to make a film on the Gandolfi brothers, the last of the handmade camera makers. Filming began in 1982 with Ken’s brother, cinematographer David Griffiths; sister-in-law producer Pamela Griffiths and close friend and photographer Laurie Lewis. With the collaboration of Joe Dunton of JDC Cameras and editor Mic Dixon the film was completed and premiered at the Sheffield International Documentary Festival in 2004. The film was specially selected for a BFI tour of UK cinemas and screened to a packed audience in the National Film Theatre. The remastered film, completed with the generous support of Graham Ford and Digital Scanning Company i-Dailies, was again selected for a prestigious screening at the Manaki Brothers Cinematographers Film Festival 2018.

This screening also marks the launch of the film on DVD. The carefully crafted package, produced by Martin Reed of Darkside Photography, includes a 36 page booklet giving intricate details of the Gandolfi manufacturing process and the long history of the making of the Griffiths film.

The creation of the Gandolfi Family Business DVD was born from a commitment to the legacy of photographer Ken Griffiths and a respect of the Gandolfi’s craft.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with members the filmmaking team.

Doors open at 18.30, for a 19.00 start.

Refreshments will be available in our licensed cafe/bar.
