This month’s film is The Way Ahead (1944), a British Second World War drama. The film stars David Niven, Stanley Holloway and William Hartnell, along with an ensemble cast of other British actors.

Written by Eric Ambler and Peter Ustinov and directed by Carol Reed, the film follows a group of civilians who are conscripted into the British Army to fight in North Africa. A patient, mild-mannered officer appropriates a cafe as his headquarters, much to the disgust of the pacifist owner. When the Germans attack, the men fiercely defend their position, aided by the cafe owner.

The Way AheadThe driving force behind the film was David Niven who was at the time a major in the British Army working with the Army Film Unit, and later served in Normandy with GHQ Liaison Regiment. Niven served as the executive producer on The Way Ahead.
