The Vito Project presents Pariah (2011)

Wed 24 Feb 2016 @ 19:00 · Events

PariahReShape and the Cinema Museum present the VITO Project, a series of free monthly screenings bringing generations of LGBTs together to provide an alternative space to mix, watch films and share ideas.

Pariah, a rousing success at its world premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival is a deeply felt human drama and the feature debut of writer/director Dee Rees. Adepero Oduye portrays Alike, a 17-year-old African-American woman who lives with her parents (Kim Wayans and Charles Parnell) and younger sister (Sahra Mellesse) in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighbourhood. A gifted student, Alike is quietly but firmly embracing her identity as a lesbian. With the support of her best friend Laura (Pernell Walker), she is especially eager to find a girlfriend. Wondering how much she can confide in her family, Alike strives to get through adolescence with grace, humour, and tenacity.

The film will be introduced by Gray Akotey, designer, entrepreneur, vlogger and aspiring filmmaker and Chardine Taylor-Stone, cultural producer, musician, DJ and activist.

The project is endorsed by BFI Flare, 56 Dean St, Gay’s the Word, ACT UP London, Gay Mates, a Change of Scene, the Cara Trust, I-Base, UK-CAB, Naz Project & Positively UK.

Doors open at 18.00, for a 19.00 start.

Refreshments will be available in our licensed cafe/bar.
