Victim

ReShape and the Cinema Museum present the VITO Project, a series of free monthly screenings bringing generations of LGBTs together to provide an alternative space to mix, watch films and share ideas.

Victim (1961), directed by Basil Dearden, and starring Dirk Bogarde and Sylvia Syms. Unfortunately Sylvia Sims is unable to introduce the film, as previously advertised, due to other commitments.

Dirk Bogarde plays successful London barrister Melville Farr (Dirk Bogarde), who on the surface appears to have a perfect career and a loving marriage with Laura (Sylvia Sims). When blackmailers link Farr to a young gay man (Peter McEnery), Farr has to face up to his own homosexuality, at a time when this was still illegal. Victim was the first mainstream British film to highlight homosexual discrimination, and is widely held, along with the Wolfenden Report, to have liberalised attitudes on the subject.

The project is endorsed by BFI Flare, 56 Dean St, Gay’s the Word, ACT UP London, Gay Mates, a Change of Scene, the Cara Trust, I-Base, UK-CAB, Naz Project & Positively UK.

Doors open at 18.30 for a 19.30 start.
