Kinima presents: Black Cat White Cat + Cine-Variety

Sat 13 Sep 2014 @ 17:30 · Events

ExpKinima Logoerience the superb yet forgotten world of cine-variety shows, as the Cinema Museum once again hosts cine-variety revivalists Kinima.

With roots in the music halls of the 1850s, the classic variety show grew into something new and exciting with the advent of cinema. During the early part of the 20th century, on the cusp of a new scientific age, the entertainment style of the music halls was adopted by some of the more forward-thinking cinemas to create a new and exciting experience: a mix of live performance and moving pictures. Kinima’s aim is to bring this lost art to you by providing a fresh selection of fast-paced variety acts and genre-defining films, all based in the spectacular Cinema Museum.

Still from Black Cat White Cat

For their second event Kinima are excited to present Emir Kusturica’s madcap comedy Black Cat White Cat (1998). Set in a colourful Gypsy settlement on the banks of the Danube, the movie tells a manic and charming story of dodgy deals, family ties, magical occurrences, life, death and romance. It’s furious energy is complemented by a spectacular score by the travelling gipsy band No Smoking Orchestra.

It’s a raucous good time that sticks two fingers up at po-faced depictions of poverty and criminality.” – Little White Lies

Kinima are going to recreate the chaos and charm of this peerless movie with a special night of balkan gipsy tones and live variety performances. Come drink, chat, dance, laugh, whoop and holler along with us as we break the fourth wall.
