The Epic Film from Ben Hur to Pompeii

Thu 11 Sep 2014 @ 19:30 · Events

Still from GladiatorMany of the most costly and most publicized films in cinema history have been epics set in Ancient Rome or Greece. Gladiator (2000), Spartacus (1960), Ben Hur (1959), Cleopatra (1963), The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964), Troy (2004) and Alexander (2004) are among the best known and they range from the sublime to the ridiculous.

What are their merits and their faults? Are they poorly scripted and overhyped or examples of cinema at its most exciting and spectacular depicting past eras as only the wide screen can.

Richard Fitzwilliams is a film critic who has studied the genre. He will be discussing these films and showing clips from the best known epics.
