French Sundays: Orphée (Cocteau, 1950)

Sun 17 Nov 2013 @ 14:30 · Events

Jean Cocteau’s retelling of the Orpheus myth with reference to the Second World War and the French resistance is a surreal cinematic tour de force. Life, death, reality and illusion all coalesce in a sometimes overwhelming kaleidoscope of imagery and ideas, demonstrating that the Orpheus myth is at once eternal, while at the same time eerily contemporaneous.

As one of our “French Sundays” events, the film will be followed by an illuminating talk by Jon Davies, placing the film in its historical and cultural context. Jon is an Associate of the British Film Institute, and teaches French Cinema at Morley College, Waterloo.

The event will end around 17.30.

Refreshments will be available in our licenced cafe/bar.
